History in Avendar
The assorted beliefs regarding the origins of Aeolis are the subject of countless tales. Some say he was a gallant hero who rose to godhood by the hand of Jolinn, and others that he was one of the trinity of the Aelin divine that came into being with the rise of the winged race's society. Whatever his beginnings, Aeolis is as old as the Aelin race and embodies its greatest virtues. He alone came through the betrayal of the Aelin pantheon unscathed. Serachel was bound in his own nightmare realms by Rystaia for his treachery, and Alil was nearly destroyed by the Shadow Mask's intrigues, never to recover fully.
Throughout history, Aeolis has been revered by gallant knights, romantic heroes and patrons of the arts. Followers of Aeolis, along with those of Jolinn and Rystaia, aided in founding the Champions of Avendar.
Goals and Methods
Aeolis seeks a world of purity and beauty; the romantic aelin ideal. He urges his followers to become creators of and patrons to the arts. To make works to inspire the goodness in others and make the dark-hearted weep for that which they cannot achieve. His followers also lead by example in the ways of gallantry, chivalry and romantic love. By leading by example and ceaselessly battling those who would seek to destroy or subvert his portfolio does Aeolis pursue this vision.
Organizations and Followings
Aeolis' portfolio allows for all manner of followers. From artists to matchmakers to gallant knights, goodly mortals of all stripes find their way into his worship.
The Order of the Silver Sword
"Step aside, m'lady, and allow me to take the fore."
The Order of the Silver Sword is a chivalrous order of warriors and templars. They serve Aeolis by living their lives with gallantry and love in their hearts. Protectors of the good and pure, they will risk their own lives for the good of another. Members of the Order often travel in the company of the opposite sex, abiding by the codes of chivalry and protecting them from all harm. Although at times they will take up arms in active pursuit of evil, they are far more likely to be roused to action in an act of defense, rather than offense, particularly when they can prove their courage in defending the opposite sex.
Artists of the Rose
"A wonderful composition, may I play you one of my own?"
Music and art are of high value to Artists of the Rose, as both touch the hearts of those who are subjected to them. They often travel the lands of Avendar searching for the inspiration for their next great work. They throw themselves into their works with abandon, pouring into them their hearts and souls. Creations inspired by love, and those made to win the heart of another, are of the greatest value to the Artists. The makers of such works are afforded great esteem by other followers of Aeolis.
The Heartwardens of Aeolis
"Love is far more precious a thing than platinum and gold."
The heartwardens serve Aeolis in his aspect as the god of hope and romantic love. They act as matchmakers and officiate weddings in times of peace, and defend the innocent in times of war. They rail constantly against those who would seek to corrupt love to their own ends and despoil all that is good and pure. This finds them primarily clashing with the followers of Serachel and the Coven of the Shunned.
Individual Followers
Those who worship Aeolis, while primarily Aelin, can come from any good-hearted background. The chosen of the Lord of the Rose are welcomed in nearly all civilized lands due to their goodly nature and entertaining pursuits. They often ally with other followers of the gods of light when danger threatens the land, often assuming roles of leadership in matters of defense.
Relationships
Aeolis' nature has garnered him many allies amongst the divine. Both Jolinn and Rystaia hold great respect for aspects of the Roselord's portfolio, and even many neutral gods hold him in esteem. His relationship with the sister-goddess of the Aelin trinity, Alil, is tenuous. While Aeolis wishes to mend with the Lady of Passions and bring her once more to the light, her mercurial nature and the interference of Serachel makes such a task monumental. As for the Shadow Mask, the enmity between he and Aeolis runs deep, and their followers work to defame and destroy each other wherever possible.
